Flesh and Spirit; Spiritual Mind Wars

Writer's picture: Russell LowryRussell Lowry

When our physical and spiritual selves clash, it can create a powerful war between two opposing forces, each with its own purpose and efforts to influence our actions.

We will call these two opposing forces our flesh and spirit or our sinful and spiritual nature.

It's interesting to note that humans were created in the image of God - a trinity three in one, just like Him, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. But once sin entered by Adam's sin, we were separated from God, and our sinful nature started to control our actions.

The underlying factor found behind all of these occurrences can be attributed to mankind's inclination to prioritize their physical and worldly cravings over the divine guidance and direction of God.

So since that first sin, the mind has constantly struggled between the two natures of one's physical and spiritual aspects. Nonetheless, The key is not to let one thought dominate but to discover how to manage and control our thoughts efficiently.

What goes on inside you?

Most everyone is probably familiar with Romans 8:1, for there is, therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and quote it often. But many Christians will stop at that point and not press forward to understand that you don't have to sin daily.

Instead, some may reason that it is ok to sin because of no condemnation. But that should not be the driving force behind your actions.

If you are in Jesus, your desire and drive should be to live in the spirit. Romans 8:2 states for the law of the Spirit of life has set us free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

The Holy Spirit has provided you a way to not walk in this bondage that sin brings to your life.

Unfortunately, Christians may become frustrated, and face challenges with sin, and some individuals may not understand how to manage their sinful tendencies.

However, it is essential to note that this lack of control was not part of God's intention for us. God has a plan for the Holy Spirit to give us the strength to overcome and succeed in Christ.

Why do I struggle with sin?

Romans 8:5 ESV

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

This struggle happens when you get so caught up in everyday life that you let your spiritual disciplines slip. These disciplines, such as praying and reading the Bible, decrease and are easily replaced by moments of pleasure that your flesh desires that can go against the righteousness of God. Then when sin steps in and takes the place of holiness, you will notice a separation between yourself and God.

When considering the physical body, it's important to remember that we experience it through our senses: sight, touch, smell, taste, and hearing. It's crucial to filter these senses through our spiritual mind and align them with the ways of the Holy Spirit rather than just seeking pleasure. Those who prioritize their fleshly desires seek pleasure and constantly crave satisfaction. If we give in to these desires, our actions will always reflect our desire to please the flesh.

Your brain constantly receives signals from all your senses, including your eyes. It is up to you to decide to say yes or no based on what you perceive. This process happens automatically and without hesitation.

As you read verse 5, the Bible states that your mind decides whether to follow the path of the flesh that leads to death or the spirit that leads to life. While it may seem like a simple decision, it

ultimately depends on your mindset at that particular moment.

Romans 8:6 ESV

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

What are the consequences?

As we examine Romans 8:6, it becomes clear that focusing solely on material desires can have severe consequences, even though it may seem unfair. It's important to understand the impact this kind of mindset can have. Let's explore this further together.

First, refer to verse one: "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those in Christ." What is in Christ?

What is in Christ?

The foundation of everything is based on your belief or faith in Jesus as the Son of God and whether He is your personal Savior or not.

Let's first look at John 3:16 to understand what this means.

John 3:16 ESV

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

According to the Word, if you believe in Jesus, you will have eternal life and not perish. However, it is essential to understand what it means to believe in Him.

G4100 pisteúō: the Greek word for believeth - To entrust (especially one's spiritual well-being to Christ):—believe(-r), commit (to trust), put in trust.

By studying the Greek meaning of the Bible, you can better understand its words. For instance, "pisteuo" goes beyond our everyday concept of "believing" and includes trusting, committing, and entrusting your spiritual well-being to Christ.

In English, "believe" is commonly used to express personal opinions or suppositions. For example, one may believe that aliens exist on Earth or predict it will rain; however, whether these beliefs are accurate remains to be seen and verified.

So personal opinions are not an option when discussing the Word of God and especially eternity. If you knew that Jesus was God's Son, you would do everything to trust Him in everything you do.

So we must understand that our actions define our true beliefs, and the truth will always be true, no matter what one's opinions are.

Conclusion

Your foundation becomes unwavering as you progress spiritually and entrust yourself to Jesus. This unshakeable foundation empowers you to flourish in Him, as affirmed in the concluding portion of Romans 8:6. "to set your mind on the Spirit is life and peace."

I hope you have a deep sense of confidence in your relationship with Christ and receive valuable guidance from the Holy Spirit. May the powerful message of Romans 8:1 strengthen your faith and bring you a sense of solace and peace. "There is, therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Focus on fulfilling your spiritual needs rather than your physical wants. Dedicate yourself to nurturing and sharing your love for Christ with those in your presence.

God bless you, and praying for spiritual growth for you all.
